Glenfiddich 19 Year Old Age of Discovery Madeira

The Glenfiddich 19 Year Old Age of Discovery Madeira is a rich 19 year old single malt matured in oak casks previously used to age fine Madeira wine. This has created an earthy, distinctive whisky with a full bodied yet fairly young character.

15th Century Portuguese explorers inspired our Age Of Discovery whiskies. They defined sea routes from Europe to Thailand and Malaysia in search of a passage to India. Along the way discovering new islands – Porto Santo and Madeira. Their cultures, customs and fine tastes.

The Glenfiddich 19 Year Old range is released just to the travel retail market until 2012 when the 19 year Old Madeira Cask was released to to the UK retail market to great excitement and applause. However this meant that Glenfiddich needed a new Age of Discovery bottling to replace the excellent Madeira cask, so here we have it – the Bourbon cask a fantastic follow-up that delivers as strongly as its older brother.

Originally a travel retail exclusive, Glenfiddich have now released Age of Discovery on the general market. Their first 19 year old whisky, finished in Madeira casks in honour of the Portugese explorers of the 15th century.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: A deep earthy aroma of sweet ripe figs and orange marmalade with bright notes of fresh gooseberries and grapes.
  • Palate: Rich and spicy, cinnamon and crushed black pepper rest on a base of deep earthy notes, caramalised fruits, crystallised ginger, raisins and hints of dry oak.
  • Finish: Pleasingly dry with warmth that fades into a lingering sweet marmalade finish.
  • Overall: Smooth and satisfying, this is an interesting whisky that wears its Madeira cask maturation on its sleeve.

Deep earthy aromas of sweet ripe fig and orange marmalade create a backdrop to bright notes –fresh gooseberry and grapes ripening on the vine. Rich, spicy cinnamon and crushed black pepper rest on a deep earthy base. Caramelised fruits, crystallised ginger, raisins and hints of dry oak unravel. A satisfying, silky smooth, almost oily texture. Antique gold

  3. Tan

Nose – Candy sweet at the beginning, then polished wood, cardamon, honey,
vanilla, honey dew and leafy. You get a bit of everything, complex yet
    easy to be like.

Taste – Shaved wood, sweet corn with hints of ashes and spicy nutmeg. Quite broad and echoing.

Finish – Medium, turn wee bit of green herbs with sweet malt remains.

  4. Raymond

Well, I do not really know what to think of the good … After the Madeira and the Red Wine had convinced me so, I am a bit disappointed with the Bourbon here. Maybe he will be better tomorrow …

  5. Chai Shing

Nose – Spicy, dried fruits, sweet
    Taste – Vanilla, oaky, honey
Finish – Medium long, spicy, sweet

A great follow-up to the Madeira cask, for me – a little bit better.
